Third in a series on Leslie's House, a shelter for homeless women in High Point.
Construction on Leslie's House, High Point's shelter for homeless women on English Road, has officially begun. The site for the 22-bed center has been graded. A temporary power pole has been erected and a portable toilet has been delivered to the site.

It is official. The dream of a permanent shelter for High Point's homeless women is on its way to reality

Need for Leslie's House has not slowed

(Second in a series on Leslie's House, a shelter for homeless women in High Point.)

Leslie's House is a footprint on a grassy lot just off English Road, beside First Reformed United Church of Christ and the West End Community Center.

Wooden stakes outline the building's future borders, and a large sign bears the facility's name and logo -- a woman silhouetted against the streets of West End.

Leslie's House is taking shape on blueprints that detail a two-story building with room for 22 beds, toilets, showers, sinks, a kitchen, laundry facilities, a "great room," a director's office and a room that will serve as an infirmary.

Women's shelter opens on English Road

West End Ministries is filling a void in the community by providing shelter for homeless, single women.

Leslie House will open by Christmas across the driveway from the nonprofit's community center at 901 English Road.

West End started operating a shelter out of the community center's lower level in January after discussions among the Rev. Don Stevenson of First Reformed United Church of Christ, the Rev. Jim Summey of English Road Baptist Church and Becky Yates of Caring Services, a board member for West End Ministries.

The original goal was to provide a warm place for women during the winter. But soon the center saw the need was greater than anticipated.
