A HOME TO BEGIN ... TO GROW ... TO BELIEVE!

Allow us to introduce you to Leslie, a shy young woman with no friends, a lost look in her eyes, yet an apparent desire to break away and to be free.  She attended church several times, but avoided conversation or friendly encounters.  Instead, Leslie fell victim to the street scene, complete with alcohol, drugs, prostitution, and violence.  Unfortunately, living on the streets led to her tragic death, and it brought the realization of a tremendous need to help homeless women in our community.

We Need Volunteers

West End Ministries and Caring Services, Inc., with the support of dedicated and concerned community leaders and volunteers, have begun to address the needs of homeless, single women who are mentally ill, victims of violence, rendered dysfunctional due to substance abuse, or just down and out.  Leslie’s House is being introduced as an alternative to the streets, the abuse, and the bad choices when a woman becomes ready to consider turning her life in a positive and productive direction

Since the opening of a small, temporary facility in January, over 200 different women have used the shelter.  That many more women have shown an interest in the facility, and the volunteers and staff of West End Ministries and Caring Services, Inc. know at least 100 homeless women by name.  The need for the shelter is apparent by these numbers, and the benefits to our community are notable.  Addressing the issues plaguing these women reduces the violence, reduces the number of hospital visits, reduces incarcerations, and helps prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.  In short, we claim an improved community proud to give hope to women who have had no reason to hope

Please review the information about Leslie’s House and thoughtfully consider a contribution to help build a permanent shelter for homeless women.  An anonymous matching grant of $25,000 has already been pledged, and a number of interested community leaders and foundations have committed their support.

In memory of Leslie, and in response to the many like her, together we will provide a safe home where women may begin a positive direction for LIFE.  We thank you in advance for supporting this significant project.

Sincerely,

Louise Foster, Susan Williard and Allison Forrester
